Delkor Australia is supplying five 158 m2 Delkor Horizontal Belt Filters, inclusive of ancillaries, in a contract from Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) for its Solomon Project in Pilbara, Western Australia. The contract was awarded in July 2011, with commissioning due in April 2012.
Each filter will treat over 300 tph of fine iron ore concentrate per hour. The concentrate will then be combined with (-8 mm) dry screened product to form the final product for transportation by rail to port, where it will be shipped, mostly to China. Designing the filters to achieve a low cake moisture was therefore of critical importance. The end user requires a Transportable Moisture Limit (TML) of <10.5 % w/w (weight / weight).
Prior to final design of the belt filters, extensive test work was carried out on samples at Delkor in Australia to achieve optimal design parameters. Filters will be shipped fully assembled to reduce on-site labour cost. Ancillaries provided by Delkor as part of the contract include vacuum pumps, filtrate pumps and receivers, walkways and vacuum pump seal water systems.
The Fortescue Metals Group is an Australian iron ore mining company and the fourth largest iron ore producer in the world as of March 2011. It commenced construction of the large, low cost Solomon mining operation in 2011, with more than three billion tons of high grade ore discovered so far.
